Media Walls and Custom Media Cabinetry
Piquant offer a unique Media Wall design service and product range that brings together high definition entertainment, contemporary lighting design and bespoke furniture design.
A media wall is a single wall of a room or stand-alone piece of furniture that integrates high definition entertainment equipment with a range of stunning lighting effects.
One key goal of a media wall is to hide wiring, mounting brackets and even the speaker systems so high definition entertainment blends seamlessly into the décor of the home or office. Our media walls can also be used to hide unsightly pipe-work.
A well designed media wall can transform a living space, giving it a contemporary edge or blending technology into a traditional décor.
We design and build our media walls from Solid Oak for our traditional range, or high-grade MDF for our painted contemporary designs. The timber used in our Oak media walls is sourced from managed and sustainable forests.

Media Wall Installation
Unlike typical home cinema or high definition media installations, a media wall can normally be constructed with minimum disruption to a room. We build and test systems in modules before delivery. Our installation teams then integrate all components on-site.
We bring together all the necessary expertise and skills, including designers, cabinet makers, electricians, plasterers and AV installers to create our bespoke media wall solutions.
Example Media Wall Installation
The pictures below show a High-End Custom Media Wall, built into the opening of an Inglenook Fireplace. The media wall is self-contained and does not affect the structure of the building, allowing it to be easily removed to reinstate the original fireplace if needed.
This media wall has a premium quality commercial grade television with in-wall Kef home cinema speakers. The speakers are housed behind custom speaker grilles. All AV equipment is contained in a custom-built English Oak cabinet that is hand finished to match existing furniture. The cabinet houses a home cinema amplifier, DVD player, Sky HD+ receiver, High-end custom media PC with Blu-Ray Player and can accomodate multiple gaming consoles. The media wall is controlled using a single Phllips Pronto remote control, programmed by Piquant. For future expansion, the media wall can act as a media hub, serving high definition media to multiple rooms.

Thin Media Walls and Hidden Speakers
Where space is of a premium, we can construct media walls as thin as 100mm. This allows all the benefits of high definition entertainment without cluttering or intruding on the living space, even for the smallest room.
To achieve such a thin construction we locate Hi-Fi and satellite equipment away from the wall and integrate low-profile hidden speaker systems.
The pictures below show the stages of a thin-wall installation utilizing hidden speakers and remote High-Definition Media Equipment.
Hidden Speaker Systems
A media wall offers the opportunity to build your speakers right in to the wall.
Our hidden speakers systems range from deep rumbling sub-woofers to home cinema quality full-range speaker units. You won't be compromising sound quality for the convenience and aesthetics of built-in speakers.
Speaker finishes can include fabrics, grills, plaster finishes or even wood veneers.
With hidden in-wall speaker technology, the wall cavity effectively becomes the speaker cabinet. We use specialist acoustic material in the construction of the wall to give a combination of great sounding speakers as well as a level of isolation of sound from adjacent rooms. For high levels of sound absorption (for example where the media wall adjoins a neighbours property) we can offer a range of wall acoustic isolation custom design solutions.
In our hidden in-furniture speaker solutions, a furniture cabinet becomes the speaker cabinet. Just as in stand-alone speakers, we blend high performance speakers drivers, acoustic materials and natural wood veneers to create a custom, hidden speaker system. Unlike stand-alone speakers though, our designs are part of the furniture itself!
Bookshelf Speakers
For those not looking to hide their speakers, we can create cavities in the wall that can take bookshelf style speakers. These cavities can be sized to meet specific speaker requirements. It should be noted though that certain speakers do not perform well in enclosed spaces. We can advise on choice of suitable speakers for media wall applications.
Location of Hi-Fi and Satellite Equipment
Hi-Fi equipment can be placed in cut-outs in the wall or in custom made media cabinetry. Alternatively we can route all cables to another location to hide the Hi-Fi equipment, this could be a central control rack or a bookcase at the back of the room. Distance between the TV and equipment is no object, we have the technology to extend high definition signals across a whole house if necessary.
Integrated Control
We design and build-in all the control systems required to operate the media wall, this can include both entertainment and lighting control equipment. Integrating controls not only hides the wires but protects valuable equipment
We can provide custom programmed handheld remote controls which will allow you to control all the equipment and lighting in your media wall installation from a single remote control unit.
Mounting the Flat-Screen TV
Flat-Screen TV's are mounted to robust brackets for security and safety. We offer both fixed and tiltable brackets. The latter are ideal when there are different viewing positions in the room and allows the TV to be swiveled to the optimal viewing angle. Brackets can be mounted to the existing wall if it is strong enough to take the weight of the TV, or if the wall structure is not strong enough, the bracket can be integrated and secured to the media wall directly.
Lighting Your Wall
A media wall provides lots of opportunities to create dramatic lighting effects. Cavities in the wall can be lit to showcase artwork or ornaments. Pelmets and hidden recesses can be created to provide hidden up-lighting or down-lighting. Glass shelves can be lit from the back so they illuminate. Even the TV can be subtly backlit.
The pictures below show a modular bespoke media wall designed to accommodate a 42" plasma TV, Projection speaker system and contemporary lighting. Hi-Fi and lighting control equipment is to be housed in the lower cupboard.
